NEEDING victory to stay afloat, Napsa Stars lost to Nkwazi to confirm their demotion to the Eden University National Division One.
“What has happened has happened, it does not matter how many times you fall but how you rise. What has happened has happened and we shall take it in a positive way so that we come back and don’t stay for a long time in the lower ranks,” Napsa coach Kampamba Chintu said.
Former Napsa trainer Patrick Phiri was on hand to comfort the players and technical bench in the dressing room.
He, however, declined to grant an interview to journalists.
Victory could have seen Napsa needing a win in the season closing fixture against Nkana to stay afloat.
After reaching the Confederation Cup group stage, Napsa struggled to find a winning formula on the local front and are lying third from bottom with 36 points.

Wazito dare Gor Mahia as Tusker, Ingwe seek crucial points

  • Mathare United coach Frank Ouna will be hoping to secure his first win as the Slum Boys look to drag themselves from bottom.
  • Fresh from receiving match winning bonuses, Leopards, who were not in action last weekend, have had enough rest ahead of this clash. Ingwe lies fourth on 37 points from 19 matches.

Wazito midfielder Kevin 'Modo' Kimani has warned reigning champions Gor Mahia to brace for the mother of all battles when the two sides clash in a Football Kenya Federation Premier League fixture at Thika Sub County Stadium Wednesday.

Elsewhere, Tusker will be looking to reclaim top spot when they face Western Stima at Ruaraka grounds, while AFC Leopards take on bottom-placed Mathare United in the second game at the same venue.

Kimani, who has so far bagged eight goals this season, is confident they can't lose to K'Ogalo twice in the league in a span of one month.

"They can't beat us twice. We can't allow it to happen. This is one of the tightly contested matches this season that we have to win," a bullish Kimani told Nation Sport Tuesday.

The money bags lost to Gor by a solitary goal on May 31 at Utalii grounds. Jules Ulimwengu scored late in the second half to bag maximum points for K'Ogalo in a match Wazito dominated.

Former K'Ogalo midfielder Boniface Omondi agreed with Kimani, saying they will be out to exact revenge.

"Let's wait and see, but beating us again will not be any easy task for them. We shall fight on the pitch and revenge. It is a tough game but winning is our priority," said Omondi, who left Gor Mahia for Wazito in September last year due to financial constraints.

Gor Mahia winger Cliftone Miheso is confident they can complete the double over their rivals. The left footed Miheso has been instrumental in creating chances for Gor's strikers and will certainly be expected to do the same on Wednesday.

"Every team playing Gor puts in an extra effort and Wazito will obviously do the same. It is a tough game that can go either way, but with the title on sight, it not a time to surrender," Miheso told Nation Sport.

Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers
UAE overcome Thailand to boost Group G chances

The UAE consolidated second spot with a strong 3-1 win over Thailand in Group G of their Qatar 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers on Monday night at Zabeel Stadium in Dubai.

Caio Canedo gave the hosts the perfect start as he found the back of the net with 14 minutes on the clock. Bert van Marwijk’s side continued to press the visitors back as they looked for a vital second goal before the break. And they were rewarded when Fabio Lima got his head on the end of a cross from Bandar Al Ahbabi and beat the goalkeeper Siwarak Tedsungnoen at the near post with 10 minutes to go until the interval.

Lionel Messi celebrates with Ander Herrera after the midfielder's opening goal

Lionel Messi's main task at Paris St-Germain will be to help deliver an elusive Champions League, but for all the fanfare surrounding the Argentina star's first start it proved a frustrating evening as the club began their European campaign with a draw at Club Bruges.

Messi struck the crossbar but struggled to make a serious impact on his full debut and it was instead Ander Herrera who netted the opener after great work down the left from Kylian Mbappe.

Hans Vanaken scored a deserved equaliser before the break to get the 29,000-seater Jan Breydel Stadium rocking.

Messi was carded for a second-half foul and Mbappe replaced after 51 minutes as PSG found it difficult to break down the energetic hosts, who may feel they could have won the game themselves.

PSG struggled to deal with the home side's aggressive pressing throughout and needed goalkeeper Keylor Navas to tip Charles de Ketelaere's well-struck effort over the crossbar to keep them level.

Messi began to find more space as the Belgian side tired late on but the 34-year-old was unable to unpick the Bruges defence, leaving boss Mauricio Pochettino to ponder how to get the best out of his all-star front three.

"We need time to work for them to build an understanding," said Pochettino. "That's been clear and we've said that in recent days. We still have to create a team."

PSG's blockbuster cast struggle to shine

Neymar, Mbappe and MessiNeymar, Mbappe and Messi started a game together for the first time

This was Messi's 150th appearance in the competition and, for a player so synonymous with Barcelona, it felt surreal seeing him line-up for the first time in Europe in the white away strip of PSG.

The six-time Ballon d'Or winner arrives in Paris to complete a lavishly-assembled forward line including Neymar and Mbappe that will be expected to bring much-desired European success to the French capital.

Things started smoothly as Mbappe teed up Herrera for his first Champions League goal - though it was his fourth of the season in all competitions for PSG - before the blockbuster cast was split up when the French forward had to be replaced early in the second half.

PSG fans have so far had to watch their new number 30 from afar, with Messi's only previous appearance since signing for the club coming as a substitute away at Reims in Ligue 1.

Coincidentally, 30 was the number donned by Messi when he was handed his Champions League debut for Barcelona by Frank Rijkaard as a shaggy-haired 17-year-old in December 2004, a game that saw the already-qualified visitors lose 2-0 at Shakhtar Donetsk.

Seventeen glittering years later - and though the legs may not be as fresh - the diminutive 34-year-old boasts the same crispness of thought and magnetic touch that led Ronaldinho - once a PSG star himself - to declare Messi his heir at the Camp Nou.

The 'Little Flea' has since collected four European titles, 10 La Ligas and most recently a Copa America to go with his individual accolades, but that did not make life any easier for Messi and PSG in their opening Group A match against Bruges.

Messi first burst into life on the edge of the Bruges area after 22 minutes, jinking into space and sliding a pass through to Mbappe, who saw his effort palmed away, and soon after the Argentine came within inches of his first PSG goal after curling an effort against the crossbar.

But those moments of customary magic came either side of a deserved leveller for the hosts, with captain Vanaken arriving late to steer in Eduard Sobol's cross.

No player has netted more Champions League goals for one club than Messi's 120 for Barcelona and with 20 minutes remaining he went close to opening his account for Paris St-Germain when he tested goalkeeper Simon Mignolet with a left-footed strike.

Messi picked up a booking for a mistimed tackle, and he and Neymar, who last won the Champions League together in 2015, were well dealt with by the Belgian champions' backline, with Scotland defender Jack Hendry putting in a particularly impressive performance.

The final whistle was met by roars from the home crowd, who continued to celebrate as Oasis tracks were belted out over the stadium tannoy on a memorable night for the club.

Jack Grealish scored a wonderful goal on his Champions League debut as Manchester City scored six past RB Leipzig to put the pain of losing last season's final behind them.

Nathan Ake heads Manchester City into the lead against B Leipzig in the Champions LeagueNathan Ake scored his first Champions League goal since joining Manchester City for £40m from Bournemouth in August 2020

Jack Grealish scored a wonderful goal on his Champions League debut as Manchester City scored six past RB Leipzig to put the pain of losing last season's final behind them.

City produced a stunning attacking display to overcome last season's Bundesliga runners-up and get their Group A campaign off to a winning start.

Grealish, the British record £100m signing from Aston Villa, illuminated Etihad Stadium after cutting inside from the left before curling home to make it 4-2.

In an extraordinary game, Nathan Ake had put Pep Guardiola's side ahead with a powerful header - the 10th different player to score in a City shirt this season - before a calamitous own goal by Nordi Mukiele doubled the lead.

The France defender got his angles horribly wrong as his attempted header back to his keeper following Kevin de Bruyne's delivery ended up in the net.

City did not have things all their own way, however, and Mukiele made up for his error by playing a role in Christopher Nkunku's goal to make it 2-1 before Riyad Mahrez restored the two-goal cushion with a penalty after Lukas Klostermann handled.

Nkunku gave RB Leipzig hope with a header only for Grealish to his score his second for the club with a delightful finish.

Former Paris St-Germain player Nkunku completed his hat-trick, but Joao Cancelo added a stunning fifth and substitute Gabriel Jesus a sixth to set City up nicely for their biggest test in the group away to PSG on 28 September.

RB Leipzig finished with 10 men after former Manchester City player Angelino was sent off in the 79th minute for a second yellow card.

Free-scoring City building momentum

Guardiola had urged his players before the game to use the hurt from losing last season's final to spur them to go one step further this time.

In an astonishing match, they scored three times in each half to take their tally to 17 in the past four matches.

Nkunku's hat-trick means that Guardiola was not entirely satisfied with what he saw but there were plenty of positives as City's season continues to gather momentum.

De Bruyne did not look like a player making his first start of the season after injury, as the Belgium midfielder produced an electric performance, while Grealish looked like he belonged on the Champions League stage.

Manchester City's players celebrate scoring against RB Leipzig in the Champions LeagueThis was Manchester City's highest scoring Champions League game, surpassing the eight goals in their 5-3 victory over Monaco in February 2017

The England midfielder continues to thrive in his new surroundings and delivered one of the game's outstanding moments with his stunning finish.

After delivering the corner for Ake to score the game's opening goal, Grealish became the first Englishman to both score and assist on their Champions League debut since Wayne Rooney in September 2004.

With Phil Foden coming on to make his first appearance for City since the Champions League final defeat, Guardiola's side are looking stronger each game.

Ever the perfectionist, he will not be happy with the goals his side conceded.

Guardiola, in charge of City for the 300th time, was at his animated best as he delivered instructions to both Grealish and Mahrez as his side closed in on victory.

Napoli returned to the top of Serie A on Sunday after Nigerian international Victor Osimhen scored the only goal in a hard-fought 1-0 win against Torino.

AC Milan had moved to the top of the table after battling back from two goals down to beat Hellas Verona 3-2 at the San Siro on Saturday.

But Napoli moved back to the summit after Osimhen, who had scored for his country in a 2-0 win against the Central African Republic in World Cup qualifying last week, headed the 81st-minute winner.

Lorenzo Insigne’s weak first-half penalty was saved and Mexico international Hirving Lozano hit the post before Osimhen made the most of an attempted clearance that ricocheted off team-mate Eljif Elmas.

“It was the most important goal of my career,” said Osimhen.

“I’m so pleased. The atmosphere at the stadium was incredible. The fans pushed us forward and we managed to get the three points.

He added: “We never gave up, we attacked until the end and deserved the win. I saw the ball fly up and I thought I could get there before the defenders. I connected well and scored such an important goal for me and the team.”

Napoli have 24 points, two more than AC Milan, after equalling the best start in club history, having also won their first eight games in 2017-18.

Reigning champions Inter Milan are on 17 points after losing ground following a 3-1 defeat away to Lazio on Saturday.

Juventus continued their climb following a disastrous start as Moise Kean’s first-half goal clinched a 1-0 win over Jose Mourinho’s Roma.

Wojciech Szczesny saved a penalty from Roma midfielder Jordan Veretout just before half-time as Juventus made it four wins on the bounce, moving up to seventh.

Roma remain fourth but have lost three of their past five outings.

“I like 1-0, as it’s a good result, especially as we kept another clean sheet,” Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri told DAZN.

“Roma are a technically good team, they have a lot of quality and caused us problems early on, then we scored a good goal and improved as time wore on.”

Atalanta were easy 4-1 winners against Empoli on Sunday as they warmed up to take on Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Veteran Slovenian forward Josip Ilicic, recalled to the team after suffering from a combination of a knee injury and severe depression, scored the opener and his first goal of the season when he was well served by Joakim Maehle on 10 minutes.

Ilicic, 33, got his second with a rasping shot on 26 minutes but Federico Di Francesco pulled a goal back for the home side.

Four minutes into the second half, Atalanta took a 3-1 lead when 19-year-old Empoli defender Mattia Viti scored an own goal before the visitors wrapped up the win when Colombian forward Duvan Zapata got his 100th Serie A goal.

The team from Bergamo now head to northwest England to face United, who were beaten 4-2 at Leicester on Saturday, in Champions League Group F.

Michael Jordan Sneakers Sell for Nearly $1.5 m, an Auction Record

A pair of sneakers worn by NBA superstar Michael Jordan early in his career sold for nearly $1.5 million on Sunday, setting a record price at auction for game-worn footwear, Sotheby’s said.

The white leather shoes with the red Nike swoosh and soles were worn by the iconic player in the fifth game of his rookie season with the Chicago Bulls, when Nike’s Jordan-affiliated brand was only just taking off as a sensation both on and off the court.

“The most valuable sneakers ever offered at auction — Michael Jordan’s regular season game-worn Nike Air Ships from 1984 — have just sold at $1,472,000 in our luxury sale in Las Vegas,” the auction house said in a statement on Twitter.

The astronomical price easily beat the record held by a pair of Nike Air Jordans which sold for $615,000 in August 2020 at a Christie’s auction.

A pair of Nike Air Yeezy 1s worn by rapper Kanye West sold for $1.8 million in April, triple the previous record for sneakers — although that was a private sale.

Jordan’s autographed size-13 lace-ups were in good overall condition, with signs of court wear and tear, Sotheby’s said. The pair was a gift from the player to Tommie Tim III Lewis, who was a ball boy for the Denver Nuggets during the 1984-’85 season.

The market for rare sports shoes is soaring. The record price for sneakers has been broken several times recently as what was seen as a niche market a decade ago now attracts interest from the general public as well as leading collectors.

And the market value of objects identified with the retired basketball superstar have skyrocketed since the release of “The Last Dance,” an ESPN/Netflix documentary that chronicles the saga of Jordan and his Chicago Bulls.

The sneakers that went under the hammer Sunday predate the first Air Jordans, the now-classic line that quickly morphed from popular basketball gear to sought-after streetwear worldwide.

– A bankable star –
The Air Ship shoe that served as the genesis for the Air Jordan series was designed by Bruce Kilgore and originally released in 1984, and it was the first sneaker worn by Jordan as an NBA professional.

That year Jordan, already a bankable star given his college basketball heroics, completed a deal with Nike in which the company gave him his own signature line of shoes and clothing.

The deal was a first for Nike, and it paved the way for a proliferation of player-brand collaborations.

Jordan’s now-famous black and red Air Ships became a focus of controversy in 1984 when the National Basketball Association sent Nike a letter informing the company that the player’s colorful sneakers which he wore during an October 18 preseason game that year violated the league’s uniform clause.

Sunday’s auction also sold a pair of Nike Air Jordan 11 Retro x OVO “Gold” sneakers, designed under a collaboration between the shoemaker and rapper Drake, for $20,160. The model was never released to the public, making them a rare set of shoes.
